Volo spettacolare, paesaggio himalayano innevato fantastico. Scalo a Srinagar in Kashmir.

Film review: Raid on Entebbe (1977), by Irvin Kershner, ****
Synopsis
Raid On Entebbe tells the amazing true story of a daring mission by Israeli commandos to free hostages from a terrorist hijacking at Entebbe Airport in Uganda and is presented here in its full length version. In 1976 four militants hijacked an Air France plane, diverting it to Entebbe, their cause was to secure the release of militants in Israel and four other countries. They held the hostages captive for three days before releasing a large number, keeping 100 passengers who were Israelis or Jews on board. What followed has gone down in history as one of the most daring rescue operations ever mounted. Directed by Irvin Kershner this Golden Globe winning film grips to the very end. The stand out cast includes Peter Finch as Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, alongside Charles Bronson and Martin Balsam.
Review
Today it's the fortieth anniversary of what was arguably the most successful rescue operation of modern times. Director Irvin Kershner (Never Say Never Again, Starwars V: The Empire Strikes Back)recreated the events leading to German members of the Baader-Meinhof group highjacking of the plane, the emotional international response and the daring operation. One is led, day by day, to re-live those dramatic days through the eyes of the Israeli leadership and the main members of the commando. Among the latter, Yonatan Netanyahu plays a central role.
What is missing, hence the four stars, is more information about the military planning and the formidable logistical obstacles that had to be overcome. I would have appreciated very much to know more about the planes used, refueling, the navigational problems, communication procedures etc. All of which are hinted at during the film but not well explained. Perhaps could this be because the film was made just a year after the events and much information was still classified?

Book Review: Zanskar, the Hidden Kingdom, by Michel Peissel, ****
The author, a very atypical Frenchman who writes in English, traveled across Zanskar in the seventies and wrote a detailed account of his personal experience. He conveys his emotions well and gives a lot of useful detail about the valley and its people. I read the book just before traveling to Zanskar in 2006, thirty years or so later than him, and found his book very useful to prepare my trip. I even met the (new) King of Zangla!
The book is made richer by a number of B/W and color photographs which help complete the narrative.
The only problem I have with the book is that the author every now and then falls into the trap of nostalgia of the good old days, before communication "spoiled" otherwise pristine regions... He even goes as far as arguing, half seriously, that inventing the wheel was a bad thing for Zanskar because it violated its blissful isolation. This despite the fact he himself points out how before communication everything was more difficult and more expensive for all of us...
All in all a highly recommended read to prepare your trip to Zanskar.

Be’ l’onore è salvo.
Gran bel pesce...

Bibliography: Books on Syria
Lonely planet provides a good guide according to their usual standard:
Bradt is perhaps the richest guide for the cultural and historical aspects of the country:
Kociekowski, Marius: “The Street Philosopher and the Holy Fool” (Sutton, 2004) Canadian writer travels through Syia.
Lesch, David: “The New Lion of Damascus” (Yale Univ Press, 2005). The rise to power of presidente Bashar Asad nel 2000.
Lieve, Joris:: “The Gates of Damascus” (Lonely Planet, 1999) the story of a Syrian journey by a Belgian writer. Interesting insight into local life in a family where a young man is arrested for political reasons.

Teatro romano a Bosra |

7° g - 3 GEN: Hama - Krak des Chevaliers - Damasco - 220km - 4 ore
