Nel 1976 un indovino cinese avverte Tiziano Terzani, corrispondente dello "Spiegel" dall'Asia: "Attento. Nel 1993 corri un gran rischio di morire. In quell'anno non volare mai". Anni dopo gli torna in mente quella profezia e la vede come un'occasione per guardare il mondo con occhi nuovi. Decide di non prendere aerei per un anno, senza rinunciare al suo mestiere. Il risultato di quell'esperienza è un libro che è insieme romanzo d'avventura, autobiografia, racconto di viaggio e reportage.


Recensione

Terzani è stato un ottimo giornalista, e questo libro è un racconto giornalistico (quindi fattuale, enunciativo più che analitico) di un anno di viaggi per l'Asia senza prendere l'aereo. Prendendo spunto da un monito ricevuto da un indovino a Hong Kong nel 1976, Terzani decide di non prendere l'aereo per tutto il 1993. Ovviamente era troppo intelligente per credere a un indovino, ma continuare a fare il suo lavoro di giornalista senza volare gli ha offerto l'occasione di incontri ravvicinati che altrimenti avrebbe probabilmente mancato.

Così il lettore è trascinato per mano in giro per l'Asia, con l'autore che cerca di incontrare altri indovini per capire se stesso. A volte dà l'impressione di credere ad incredibili storie di improbabili "indovini", forse gioca un po' al ruolo del falso ingenuo, ma i quadri degli scorci d'Asia che ci dipinge sono avvincenti.

Sono passati quasi vent'anni, l'Asia è cambiata, molto cambiata, in meglio certamente, ma il libro rimane una lettura interessante!

Looking back afterwards, Terzani reckoned that 'I was marked for death and instead I was reborn.'

Review

Terzani was a journalist and this book is a journalistic account (more factual than analytical) of a year travelling in Asia without taking a plane. Remembering a prophecy by a fortune teller in Hong Kong in 1976, Terzani decides not to fly for the whole of 1993. Of course he was too intelligent to just believe a fortune teller, but continuing his job as a reporter without flying gave him a chance to have many close encounters he would otherwise have missed.

The reader is taken by the hand around Asia, as the author tries to meet other fortune tellers and double-check his prophecy. Sometimes Terzani gives the impression of actually believing the unlikely stories of these fortune tellers, maybe he is a bit disingenuous, but the pictures he draws of Asia are vivid and come out live from his pages.

Twenty years have gone by, Asia has changed (for the better I think) but the book still offers an interesting perspective on life and culture in this immense continent.
