Cork, Ireland
Cork is the 2nd largest natural harbor in the world after Sydney, it has a huge 5m tide which requires skill to operate in. The river is navigable 12 miles up to the city of Cork. It was a poor town for a long time, lots of emigrants going from here to the USA.
Now it is doing very well. Ford established its first factory outside the USA here, but now it is Apple Computers which is the largest employer.
20,000 students at university and 25 million euro golf course bought by Chinese investors!
Only 15pc of population speak Irish as main language but all must study in school

Start of a new cruise on Queen Victoria
It is drizzling and quite cold for May at about 10 degrees, hopefully it will change but this is a cruise of the British Isles after all, not the Caribbean isles.

Film review: Youth (2017) by Feng Xiaogang, *****

In this epic spanning several decades, Youth shows Comrades of the People's Liberation Army fight amongst themselves as much as on the battlefield – and cause as much damage as the war that tore their lives apart.
Review
Incredibly passionate and captivating historical film about life in China during the huge transformations that took place after Mao's death. A love story starts during the excesses of the cultural revolution with the "great helmsman" still in power, and the trauma of the war against Vietnam in 1979. After that, rapid reforms make many Chinese rich, and many officials corrupt, but the human story of the protagonists carries through the ages. One man's good deeds are taken for granted and not appreciated any more.
The film was supposed to be released just before the 2017 party congress but it was held up until after the congress itself for some reason. Maybe because it contains thinly veiled criticism of Mao and also raises many questions about the new system of the country.
A strongly recommended film about how China became what it is today.

Train back to Hong Kong and flights to Europe
Brunch with family, bamboo shoots pork, water chestnut soup. And fish: a big black from the pond on our terrace! It is quite common for people to keep gold fish and live fish for eating together, in the same pond!
A neighbor gracefully drives us to Chenzhou station in his brand new Honda, which he points out costs twice as much in China as in Japan. Honda has factory here but it is supposed to be producing for export only, so he is not sure where his car, or parts of it, comes from.
He is a banker and has a good life. Happy with the way things are going in China but he says communism can never work. China is still officially pursuing communism but in practice it is successful because it is capitalist.
Chenzhou station is crowded beyond imagination, never seen it so full of people like an egg. And it must have been worse a couple of weeks ago for Chinese New Year's. They estimated that about 600 million people travel across the country to go home, the largest annual migration in the history of the world. No wonder the transportation system is busy.
Can't move around no chance to buy my favorite duck neck snacks from Shenhua. Bags through x-rays, but they don't check any of them.
people are allowed onto platforms in waves as each trains homes in on the station. There is one train every 8 to 10 minutes going either north toward Wuhan and Beijing or south to Guangzhou.
Fast train (over 300kmh) is slightly delayed but no problem we have a good buffer before our flight from Changsha. Once underway, the delay increases somewhat because one passenger sets off the smoke alarm. The driver slows down and two security guards walk up and down the train to catch the smoker. I am not sure what they will do to him or her but after about 10 minutes we resume our normal speed.
At Changsha station an avalanche of people moves to catch a bus or a taxi, or a maglev shuttle to the airport. We choose the bus as there is less to walk and we have large heavy suitcases full of Hunan food!
Just before boarding bus another x-ray machine for our bags, again no one cares to check .
The bus is an old and cranky machine from the bad old times, and a TV screen blasts off some kind of funny talk show at ear-piercing volume. It must be funny because Lifang laughs all the time.
At the airport we have to wait a while to check in but there is no place to sit down as people take up seats with bags, or lie down across three seats and think it is normal. We do not feel like starting an argument and just relax on our suitcases.
After check in we go through yet another x-ray machine no one pays any attention to and then passport control. Our flight to Hong Kong is in the same terminal area as international flights (and flights to Macau and Taiwan). Hong Kong is still a "special" administrative region, with its own borders, police, currency, laws etc. It is supposed to remain so at least until 2047 according to the treaty signed with the UK when the last remnant of the British empire was returned to its motherland.
After which we have another (you guess?) x-ray machine control! This time the do look very carefully and stop me. A guard asks if I am carrying a knife. I replied of course I was not. He asked me to open my trolley and take pretty much everything out. Of course there was no knife but the spine of a box looked like one on their screen. OK I can go.
The lounge of Changsha airport is nothing spectacular, and in fact they have reduced both its size and its offering since my last visit. Just some snacks and non-alcoholic drinks.
Uneventful flight to Hong Kong, where we spend a pleasant hour or so in the Qantas lounge while waiting to connect to our British Airways flight to Brussels. We walk to the gate quite early to board with the first batch of passengers and enjoy a drink or two before take-off.
Here, again, we run into the less than fully prepared staff of British Airways. We're flying to London and connect directly onward to Brussels. They won't let my Chinese wife board the plane because she does not have a Schengen visa. The rule says that she does not need one, because she is a resident of the UK and is with me, her husband, and an EU citizen. She would need one if she were traveling alone (though they usually let her through) but not in my company. It is a rather complicated rule, but it should not be beyond the grasp of people who check passport for a living.
I love a united Europe but they could really make an effort to simplify the rules back there in Brussels. Or just allow anyone who legally lives in Europe to move anywhere else in Europe, whatever the passport. but you would think the employees of a major international airline which fly planeloads of people from every corner of the world would familiarize themselves with it. No, they did not. For the third time in a little over a year we are held for some 30 minutes while the staff makes phone calls and scrambles to read manuals. I googled the relevant EU rule on the internet in less than 10 seconds and showed it to them, and finally we were allowed on board.
One more trip to Asia is over, though every time it feels less and less like a trip and more of a home coming. A long night on our BA flight and we'll be in Europe. BA is on a downhill slope when it comes to quality. Service on the plane, while friendly, is less meticulous and attentive than it used to be.

Festival delle lanterne a Guiyang e ristorante Miao
Mattinata in piazza accanto alla zona pedonale. Molta gente a far festa, somprattutto anziani, ma sappiamo che in questa città ci sono soprattutto anziani e bambini. I giovani sono nelle grandi città a far soldi. Molti sono venuti qui durante le feste del capodanno che si concludono oggi, ma la stragrande maggioranza sono già ripartiti.
Il cibo viene servito nel solito tavolo girevole "lazy Susan" ed è piuttosto vario, ricco e, naturalmente, piccante! La gente mangia, beve, ride e persino fuma sigarette, tutto in una volta. La maggior parte degli uomini beve molto. Liquore di riso cinese. Bevono un bicchierino alla volta e per dimostrare il loro punto ogni volta girano il bicchiere vuoto nell'altro in modo che tutti possano vedere all'interno che è vuoto. A volte lo capovolgono per mostrare che non è rimasta una goccia. Ne bevo due o tre, poi mi fermo. Non mi piacciono questo tipo di competizione, che comunque non potrei mai vincere. Sorprendentemente, nessuno si ubriaca e alla fine della serata torneranno tutti a casa (o anche in macchina) senza alcun problema. Pensavo che i russi e gli ucraini fossero i più accaniti bevitori, o forse i polacchi, ma gli hunanesi potevano affrontare qualsiasi europeo dell'est!

Visita ad antichi villaggi vicino Guiyang
Vecchie case senza impianti idraulici, la maggior parte sono aperte si può entrar dentro a vedere come si vive in un villaggio cinese. Oggi rarità, anzi quasi museo, anche se nelle campagne la situazione migliora lentamente.
Mi attraggono soprattutto le tegole di argilla dei tetti spioventi, che oggi molti sostituiscono con tetti piatti perché sono più pratici per seccare frutta e verdura al sole.
Poi andiamo ad un altro villaggio, si chiama Xiao Bu, questo più vivo, la gente ci vive ancora. È stato dichiarato monumento nazionale, per preservare il retaggio della vecchia Cina. Chi ci vive inoltre può beneficiare deo turismo dei curiosi, magari giovani, nati e cresciuti nelle città con tutti i servizi, che non hanno mai visto un villaggio in vita loro.
Ad ora di pranzo ci imbattiamo in un grande gruppo che banchetta all'esterno di un ristorante. Mi sono avvicinato, curioso come sempre di fare qualche foto e magari stabilire un minimo di contatto. Tutti mi accolsero calorosamente, ridevano e scherzavano fra di loro ed io costituivo evidentemente un bonus speciale per la riuscita della festa e anche senza capire una parola era chiaro che ero il benvenuto. Intanto dalle cucine del ristorante arrivava il cibo. Tanto cibo.
Qualcuno mi offrì una costoletta di maiale, ce n'erano a centinaia in grandi piatti al centro di ciascun tavolo, come si usa in Cina. Calde e con una squisita cotenna croccante, anche se stavamo per andare a pranzo non avrei mai potuto rifiutare!
Poco dopo arrivò mia moglie e mi spiegò che si trattava di un funerale! Il figlio maggiore del deceduto portava un lungo velo sulla testa, che arrivava fino a terra dietro le sue spalle, e passava di tavolo in tavolo inginocchiandosi davanti ai commensali su un fascio di paglia che portava con sé. Gli invitati, parenti e amici immagino, lo consolavano e lo facevano rialzare.
Me ne andai a pancia piena e contento del fugace contatto. Anche perché dopo un po’ smisero di mangiare e si allinearono tutti in un lungo corteo funebre verso la montagna più vicina, dove avrebbero seppellito il defunto. Seppellire un morto in cinese si dice "portarlo alla montagna".
Mangiammo quindi nello stesso ristorante, ma all'interno. Io veramente ero sazio ma assaggiai comunque.
Nel pomeriggio andammo a visitare un enorme giardino botanico non distance, ma in questa stagione non c'erano molti fiori.
Per finire la giornata all'aperto visita ad una fattoria che coltiva fragole: possiamo coglierle noi stessi (fragole a marzo? ma sono protette in serre) e le troviamo molto saporite anche se care, 70 Rmb al chilo, quasi 10 euro !
Cena in un ristorante di Guiyang, vicino al Parco della Cultura, dove gli amici vicini di casa avevano prenotato una sala privata per il nostro gruppo, come spesso si fa qui. Prima però abbiamo comprato vino e distillati. Sono ovviamente molto più cari al ristorante che al supermercato, ma è permesso portarsi le proprie bottiglie senza pagare un corking charge come accade in altri paesi.

Cherry blossoms in Guiyang, Hunan
There are actually two orchards, one is free and for the other one we would need to buy a ticket that costs 40 Yuan. The ticketed one is more crowded, maybe it is better?, but the taxi driver told us it is not necessarily more beautiful, and in fact he had seen that most of the flowers had already fallen to the ground. So we decide to go to the free one.
The driver can only go so far, not really all the way to the garden. We have a choice: walk or take a motorbike taxi. As it is already a bit late in the afternoon, we chose the latter option. Someone with a bike offers to take us the few hundred meters that separate us from the orchard for 5 Rmb.
Once we reach the area we are getting close to sunset but the warm pre-sunset light is very useful to take some good photos. Only a few dozen people are left, and the local hawkers of drinks and snacks are beginning to pack up.
As I snap away at the flowers and take some portraits of my wife, I notice a girl wearing an eye-catching white and blue costume who is posing for her girlfriend. She also has a veil she lets lose in the wind while the other girl takes photos with her phone.
It is now getting dark, not enough light for more flower pictures, but we take a walk toward the town's mine. The dig out lead and silver from here. The mine is still partly in operation but has a section that is open for tourists. It is too late now but we'll come another time.

Longish walk back home, about 1 hour. On the way I looked at a wine shop, China is now the 6th largest producer of wine and the middle class wants ever more good wines. This one though sells mostly distilled products. Most wines are red, which the Chinese consume in much larger quantities than whites. Some bottles are Chinese and a few French. A couple of Italian bottles from Tuscany and Venetia. Most wines are priced between 80 and 250 Rmb.
Dinner at home. As we're about to finish dinner the neighbors come in for a visit. Their little one and my niece Cindy play together quite often, even once kissed on the lips before they reached 2 years of age!

Banca, dentista e manicure a Guiyang
Giornata di commissioni varie che dobbiamo sbrigare in giro per la città. Cominciamo con la banca, dove dobbiamo cambiare alcune banconote di euro che ho portato per fare qualche regalino.
Le regole per cambiare valuta straniera in Cina sono un po’ complicate, e cambiano con una certa frequenza. Tanto per cominciare, solo la Banca di Cina (Bank of China) è autorizzata a cambiare. Poi, in questo periodo non fanno cambiare contante agli stranieri, quindi devo dare i soldi a mia moglie per cambiare a nome suo. Mi pare strano, come fanno tutti i turisti e gli uomini d'affari che vengono qui e non possono cambiare? Vero che pochi ormai portano contante. Forse gli alberghi lo accettano ancora, non se sono sicuro, la Cina è decisamente avanti con il denaro elettronico.
Quando arriviamo alla filiale della Banca di Cina prendiamo un numero e aspettiamo un'ora che arrivi il nostro turno. Non è particolarmente piacevole aspettare: l'ambiente è alquanto tristanzuolo, le sedie non particolarmente comode ed i fumatori appestano l'aria. Quando arriva il nostro turno ci dicono che l'unico impiegato autorizzato a cambiare valuta estera oggi non c'è. Riproveremo.
Ci rechiamo quindi presso un'altra banca, la International Commerce Bank of China (ICBC) per aiutare mia suocera in alcune operazioni sul suo conto. Lei non ama particolarmente le nuove tecnologie elettroniche per maneggiare il denaro.
Mentre Lifang fa le sue cose scambio qualche elementare convenevole con un impiegato in divisa blu che sta in piedi vicino alla porta d'ingresso, sembra una guardia della sicurezza. Mentre aspetto lo vedo camminare su e giù davanti alla porta che si apre liberamente, non ci sono metal detectors o altri controlli per evitare che maleintenzionati entrino in filiale, magari armati.
Dopo un po’ lo vedo avvicinarsi ad una vecchietta che è in difficoltà al bancomat, ed aiutarla sul touchscreen con l'operazione che non riusciva a completare. Poi se ne torna a fare la guardia.
Passa ancora un po’ di tempo - Lifang ci mette un po’ a far quello che deve fare - e noto che la guardia ha impugnato una scopa ed una pattumiera e sta pulendo per terra. Quando ha finito si allontana per tornare con un secchio d'acqua ed un mocio col quale pazientemente si mette a lavare tutti i pavimenti. Poi prende un lavavetro telescopico con un secchio d'acqua e cominciare a pulire le grandi vetrate della banca, che effettivamente ne avevano proprio bisogno! Infine, non pago, prende una grande busta di plastica e comincia a svuotare i secchi dell'immondizia
Dunque il bravo impiegato svolge tre funzioni in banca: guardia, spazzino e impiegato alla cassa, almeno quella elettronica. Non male. Mi immagino la reazione di qualche bancario italiano se si dovesse trovare a fare lo stesso: Abbasso lo sfruttamento! Inaccettabile! Sciopero!
Mi dice Lifang che guadagna sui 1200-1400 Rmb al mese, più o meno quello che mette in tasca una donna delle pulizie che lavora a tempo pieno nel nostro condominio.
Tornando a casa ci godiamo una bella passeggiata lungo il giardino chiamato "Parco della Giada" a due passi dal nostro comprensorio. Fa freddo ma c'è un bel sole, siamo bene imbacuccati e ce la godiamo. Noto sui marciapiedi alcune signore, sulla settantina direi, ma potrebbero essere più giovani, che lustrano le scarpe. Hanno un banchetto su sui si siedono ed un altro, più alto, sui cui fanno accomodare i clienti. Ogni lustrata di scarpe costa 3 Rmb e ci mettono una mezz'oretta. Per gli stivali di Lifang però ne chiedono 5, mi pare giusto, sono alti fino al ginocchio!
La strada oggi non smette di regalare sorprese. Almeno per me sono sorprese, ma in realtà qui sono cose normali. Per la sorpresa più sorprendente è proprio questo, che siano cose normali!
Ad un incrocio vedo un uomo, tra i sessanta ed i settanta, che dirige il traffico. Non è un vigile. Veste abiti civili ma ha una grande fascia rossa sul braccio e una paletta del tipo in dotazione ai Carabinieri in Italia. Oltre a dirigere il traffico, intervenendo soprattutto quando cambia la luce del semaforo, declama poesie in dialetto hunanese.
Che bel modo di passare il tempo in modo utile durante la pensione! Penso che forse potrei farlo anche io a Roma, recitare Trilussa mentre aiuto i pedoni a sopravvivere nel traffico selvaggio della mia città.
Nel pomeriggio accompagnamo mia suocera dal dentista, nella zona pedonale di Guiyang. Lo studio dentistico, come spesso succede qui (e a Londra, ma mai in Italia) è al piano terra, con accesso diretto dal marciapiede.
Appena entrati la segreteria, un banchetto bianco con una segretaria in camice che registra le generalità e poi chiama il professionista adatto. Si può venire senza appuntamento.
I riuniti sono disposti in un grande spazio aperto, con tanti dentisti che lavorano fianco a fianco circondati da vetrine nelle quali sono esposti, come oggetti in un museo di gioielli, dentiere e ponti. Dalle grandi vetrate si vede la strada e, quindi, i passanti possono godere dello spettacolo dei pazienti sdraiati a bocca aperta che vengono trapanati!
Mia suocera ha bisogno di un'igienista e poi avrebbe anche necessità di installare un ponte. Costano 300 Rmb (40 euro circa) con il metallo meno pregiato, 800 Rmb (110 euro) in lega nobile. Vedremo.
Poi mia suocera va a casa e noi restiamo un giro. Lifang decide di farsi dipingere le unghie, qui c'è un negozio dove sono molto bravi. Per 80 Rmb, in due ore di lavoro, le decorano tutte le unghie con squisite miniature floreali, peonie e loti.
La ragazza dipinge con un pennellino sottilissimo, linee micromillimetriche si intrecciano per un risultato realistico e creativo al tempo stesso. Sul dito medio Lifang chiede e ottiene la replica del disegno della linea "Diva" di Bulgari, un classico che fu dedicato a Liz Taylor credo negli anni cinquanta.
Io passo due ore a zonzo, guardo vetrine e la gente che passa. Ma fa freddo e dopo un po’ torno al negozio. Sono molto gentili, le ragazze mi offrono una poltroncina e del tè caldo. Qualche domanda sull'Italia e su Londra. Sono chiaramente un'attrazione, quasi sicuramente il primo italiano che hanno mai visto, e per la maggior parte di loro probabilmente anche l'ultimo.
Tornando a casa la giornata è suggellata dall'acquisto di un paio di chili di "castagne d'acque", 20 Rmb al chilo, ottime, non le conoscevo.

Leiyang to Guiyang by bus
The bus too is fully booked, but we get two seats in the back.
Three men board and take seats without tickets, when collector asks for tickets they say they could not buy them because they were sold out. They argue, they want to go home. Then three more passengers with tickets board but can't find any seats because they've been taken by the three men. A long argument ensues then finally the three men leave.
Very noisy trip, people suck their drinks loudly, a car-sick girl vomits no one cleans up.
Meanwhile, it's been raining all day long.
We pass through some old villages. Old houses with pagoda roofs quite charming though need restoration.
New housing on the other hand mostly has with flat roof, just boxes of brick and mortar, no character but popular because can dry fruit on top . good for farmers who move to town but still grow crops in village plots.
Once at the Guiyang coach station we find a Didi (Chinese Uber) taxi driver who is rude and unhelpful. He does not move from his seat and keeps smoking while we load and unload heavy suitcases. But anyway we are home!
It is 4pm or so by the time we get to the apartment, and it is very cold. Hunan houses don't have a central heating system but many (including ours) have electric systems but people don't turn them on. In the evening it's 11 degrees inside, essentially the same temperature as outside.

Wedding in Leiyang
They tell us how the husband went to the house of bride to take her with him and left a chicken as a symbolic form of gratitude to her family for having brought her up!
On a simple wooden table in the middle of the main room of the paternal house, we are offered tea, peanuts and cigarettes.
All around are many old houses with clay tiles, wooden beams and wood floors.Some are being demolished for new ones with flat roofing and cement bricks. More functional if less charming.
Back in town we see a rather large Christian church next to a Buddhist temple. We get our shoes cleaned by a happy lady (one of many) who is working on the sidewalk with a little stool, a chair for her clients, brushes and polish. She is happy, smiling and works fast and very well!
At the reception, people come and give envelopes at a table by the entrance where each envelope is opened and the money counted, then most of them just eat and go away, unabashedly taking leftovers with them! The meal is scrumptious as expected, local cuisine, moderately spicy. The bride and groom spend some time at the different tables, and at the end they come to ours. They are exhausted, but finally can relax a bit and eat their lunch!
We later take a walk around the Western Lake park with a large pond and bridges by the western lake middle road. Lots of children running around, many elderly men play card and mahjong. One lady is screaming obsessively at her son for who knows what reason, then starts to hit him. Lifang tries to calm her down but she tells her to mind her own business!
There is a beggar with broken feet, he says to my wife he was a construction worker but fell from the 3rd floor of a building and broke both his feet. He says he gets 200 rmb a month from government, just enough to pay rent for a room. Then has to beg for a living, moves around on a small sled with 4 little wheels and pushes himself forward with two broken metal pipes.
My impression is that it is not easy to be a beggar in China, it is not a compassionate culture if you can generalize about 1.5bn people. His pot is almost empty. I am thinking of London where beggars get much better treatment from passersby but a better comparison is India where (again difficult to generalize) people give more easily in the streets. Quite often I've seen people who look poor give to those who are poorer. In China apparently a lot of beggars are fake, they pretend to be sick or handicapped.
In the end we manage to buy tickets at coach station to go to Guiyang tomorrow, no chance for train, but better than walking!

Some of the highlights: I was first attracted by the local cold noodles, roughly grated with a special tool from a big boulder of dough. You then add spices and bits and pieces of veggies and meats. Also interesting the hot soup with veggies, pork, mushrooms, taylor-made for each of us by a dedicated chef.
After breakfast the real challenge of the day awaits us: find tickets to Leiyang for the wedding ceremony of Carrie, one of our best Chinese friends, but no seats were available to purchase online as usual. It is still the Chinese new year rush, with over half a billion people moving around the country to spend the holidays at home. We went to the station and tried our luck at the ticket office, but no way.
We were then approached by some scalpers who wanted 300 Rmb, not for tickets but as a fee to smuggle us on a train then we could then, supposedly, buy standing tickets. However I have never seen anyone standing on the fast train we need, and the slow train would take way too long, maybe up to 4 hours as opposed to 1. The whole thing is fishy, we give up.
We're stuck! My wife then remembers that there is an alternative: get bus tickets instead. We manage to catch the last bus to Chenzhou at 5:30pm, but must pay for the whole ride to Chenzhou even if we plan to get off at Leiyang. Actually at a highway station which is the stopover for Leiyang-bound passengers. But that's the way it is and we're lucky to be able to get (close) to our destination! Carrie's husband and his brother (who owns a car) will come and pick us up. Very kind for someone who's getting married tomorrow!
Meanwhile great buffet (40 Rmb pp) with unlimited food and beer at a restaurant by the gas station. Tons of meat (great), fish (so so) and veggies (again great). Beer is a local brand, kind of light, but tasty. No fresh fruit however. I loved the chicken paws and the pork belly. Also black fungus with quail eggs was juicy and inviting.

Macau
Huge crowds are channeled in one direction only through narrow cobbled streets, after all this façada is still one of the main attractions of Macau.
Other than gambling, Macau is well known for the manufacturing of matches and fireworks.
In the afternoon we visited a "Venetian" complex, complete with canals and gondolas, several of which are driven by Italian (I know they are, I talked to a couple of them) gondolieri one is a woman.

Alaskan crab in Hong Kong
Easy day of relaxing at the W hotel pool overlooking the city and some walking around.
Dinner at the Star Seafood restaurant on busy Nathan Road, there are only locals, obviously not yet discovered by the big guidebook publishers. I was here a few years ago by myself and tried to order their signature Alaskan crab, but they refused to serve me because it was too big!
We can not choose our own crab from large tanks which are prominently located at the ground level by the sidewalk. Each crab has a price tag attached to one of its claws.
A waiter grabs one for us and takes it to the table where he holds it up high for our final approval before dispatching it to the kitchen.It comes back a while later on a large serving dish, piping hot and with all the shell and claws cracked open for us to enjoy the delicate meat inside.
It is a noisy restaurant, not really ideal for a romantic dinner with my wife but the crab is amazing and the price does not break the bank.
The head waiter advises us not to order anything else as this large animal (well over 1kg with the shell ) will be more than enough to sate our appetite. he was right.
When we ask for the bill he points out to my wife that it's CNY and so he expects a red packet from us, ie a significant tip!

Hong Kong New Year preparations and flower market on Valentine's Day
Visit a new year market with lots of flowers, food and a couple of musical shows. Huge crowds! The flow of the masses of people is channeled so that everyone is going in a one-way direction around the portion of Victoria's Garden at Causeway bay which is dedicated to the fair. It would be impossible to have everyone move at random, freely, there are just too many of us. Those in the middle of the human river can't even see stands on either side!

The Maldives is a small and beautiful archipelago south of India, more renowned for luxury resorts than experiments in democracy. Review
It is unusual for a book entirely dedicated to the Maldives to come out, and here it is from an English journalist who lived and worked there for four years. The book is a compendium of his time there. It touches upon many aspects of Maldivian life, with special attention to the political dimension. Loads of facts and footnotes but also some opinions and evaluations. The book is written loosely in chronological manner, and it ends with the author's departure in 2013.
The general approach is typically English, ie detached. John J gets to know a lot about the Maldives but one does not get the impression he ever fell in love with the country, or was emotionally involved with it at all. But that is not a criticism, in fact perhaps it is a good thing in a journalist!
What the book lacks is a more critical organization of the issues, but perhaps as a journalistic chronicle it was never intended to delve in political analysis. Still, you will find more raw material for political analysis her than in any other book I know of that has been written on this country in the last decades.
I recommend reading this book to understand more about a country known mostly for its resorts.

Book review: Wild Swans (1992), by Jung Chang, *****
Through the lives of three different women - grandmother, mother and daughter - this book tells the story of 20th-century China. At times scarcely credible in the details it reveals of the suffering of millions of ordinary Chinese people, it is an unforgettable record of tyranny, hope and ultimate survival under conditions of extreme harshness.
In 1924, at the age of 15, the author's grandmother became the concubine of a powerful warlord, whom she was seldom to see during the 10 years of their "marriage". Her daughter, born in 1931, experienced the horrors of Japanese occupation in Manchuria as a schoolgirl, and after their surrender joined the Communist-led underground fighting Chiang Kai-Shek's Kuomintang. She rose to be a senior Communist official, but was imprisoned three times. Her husband, also a high official and one of the very first to join the Communists, was relentlessly persecuted, imprisoned and finally sent to a labour camp where, physically broken and disillusioned, he lost his sanity.
The author herself grew up during the Cultural Revolution, at the time of the personality cult of Mao and the worst excesses of the Gang of Four. She joined the Red Guard but after Mao's death she was to become one of the first Chinese students to study abroad.
Review
This is one of the best books I have ever read. It traces a micro-story of a family through three generations of highly motivated women interwoven with the history of China over almost a century. It it meticulous and fastidious about details and context, which allows the reader to immerse himself into the incredible evolution and revolution of this continent/country.
China went from the feudal system of the late Qing dynasty to a modern superpower, passing through two revolutions, civil war, foreign aggression, a world war, economic transformations that took other countries centuries to complete. In the course of these events China was invaded, then locked itself up and isolated its people from the world, then opened up again after Mao's death, and that is roughly where the book ends.
So we don't see the new China in this book, but we can understand how it got there and why the Chinese today are so eager to break with the early period of the People'd republic and open up to the world. Even the Communist Party of China today considers the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution, two of the central events in the book, to have been complete mistakes.
Translated in 37 languages and 13 million copies later, this book is banned in China, perhaps because it is very critical of Mao. Even if today the policies of China are the opposite of what Mao preached, the time to criticize the great Chairman too much has not yet arrived. Deng Xiaoping famously said Mao was 70% right and 30% wrong. This book would probably reverse those two numbers!

Film review: Farewell my concubine (1993) by Chen Kaige, *****
The film gives a most interesting overview of China's history in the XX century through the eyes of Peking opera actors. We see the country moving from the fall of the Qing Empire (the last eunuch is still around for a long time after the advent of the Republic), through the Japanese invasion, the civil war and the various phases of the Communist rule.
Two boys are educated to play two classical roles in the Peking Opera, one masculine and the other effeminate. They are so good at it that they play the opera together for their entire career: during the chaos of China after the fall of the Qing Empire, during the Japanese occupation, the brief Nationalist takeover, the Communist take over, the Cultural Revolution.
Gong Li becomes the wife of the masculine actor, and as such created serious, and ultimately unsolvable, dilemmas in the mind of her husband, with tragic consequences.
Review
In this film the character Douzi represents in many ways the real life of the actor Leslie Cheung. Douzi was gay and struggled to be accepted in the society of his time, and so was Cheung in real life. He is however successful professionally and admired for that, and so is Cheung, the first Hong Kong actor who acted in a mainland China film. And the real life of Cheung represents Douzi's role in the film: he can't take the pressure any more and ends up committing suicide. Beautiful costumes!
A courageous masterpiece by Chen Kaige, a pillar of Chinese film in the XX century. He addressed the controversial issues of homosexuality and the Cultural Revolution in a film before anyone else dared to do so in the People's Republic of China. For this "farewell my Concubine" was banned shortly after its release in 1993, only to be cleared by the censors a while later in an abridged form.

Film review: A United Kingdom (2016) by Amma Asante, *****
From director Amma Asante, starring David Oyelowo (Selma) and Rosamund Pike and set against the breath-taking backdrops of the African savannah and period London, A United Kingdom celebrates the inspiring real-life romance of Seretse Khama, King of Bechuanaland (modern Botswana), and Ruth Williams, the London office worker he married in 1948 in the face of fierce opposition from their families and the British and South African governments.
Review
A historical narrative of one sad page of the decline and fall of the British Empire after WW II. There are two levels to the story: a personal tale of love and a non-fiction account of the birth of a new African country.
Churchill is depicted for what he was: an anti-democratic imperialist, who would go back on his promises to try and salvage the decomposing British empire. But the prejudice of blacks against whites is displayed as well at length.
In the face of all these difficulties, it was a remarkable feat for the young leader to pull off a national reconciliation that would make Botswana a unique success story in post-colonial Africa. One of very few examples where the leaders who took over power from the colonial rulers actually improved their nation's lot and did not squander national resources for personal gain.
Highly recommended movie to understand a very special part of Africa.
